Juan Rivera drives Los Angeles Dodgers to 7-4 triumph over Washington Nationals – MLB Update
The Los Angeles Dodgers’ batter Juan Rivera drove in two game holding shots in the early phases of the match to take his club to a 7-4 win over the Washington Nationals in the third outing of the four-game series at Nationals Park in Washington on Thursday, September 8.
Right-fielder and first-baseman, Rivera started his valuable hitting in the first inning when he doubled to deep-left field, allowing James Loney and Matt Kemp to score a game opening two runs. With the same kind of combination again in the third inning, Rivera hit a fastball to deep-left for the same result, scoring James Loney and Matt Kemp.
Chad Billingsley tossed shaky pitches and yielded four runs that tied the game at 4-all in the bottom of the third inning. Billingsley also permitted three walks and a homer to the Nationals’ centre-fielder Jayson Werth near the end of the third inning.
Dodgers’ manager Don Mattingly seemed discontent with his starter.
"We gave him some runs early -- then he walks three guys in one inning," Mattingly said. "Got to locate. I don't care who you are -- you've got to locate."
After the third inning, the game became electrifying as pitchers from both ends tossed perfect innings. Dodgers’ Josh Lindblom, Hong-Chih Kuo, Matt Guerrier and Kenley Jansen each did not allow any runs over their short spells.
Nationals’ starter Chien-Ming Wang came back after the third inning and held the Dodgers bat under his gritty pitching until the sixth inning. He completed his outing with seven allowed hits and four runs over 80 pitches. Todd Coffey and Tyler Clippard provided perfect back up with their no-score innings.
The game was tied at 4-all before the start of the ninth inning. In the top, Tony Gwynn doubled to deep-centre to earn an RBI double to take a 6-4 lead for the Dodgers. Dee Gordon widened it to 7-4 with his line drive RBI single. All these runs were made against the Nationals’ closer Drew Storen, who lost his third game of the season.
Mike MacDougal worked a perfect eighth inning to get his third win of the season. He struck-out one batter over his 17 pitches long one inning to improve his record to 3-1 with a 1.88 ERA. Javy Guerra landed in the bottom of the ninth inning and crushed the Nationals with his perfect changeups to get his 16th save of the season.
The fourth outing of the series that was scheduled to be played today was postponed again due to heavy rain. Matchup day still has not been announced by the team officials.
